For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel
For the Refua Shlema of Chai Yaakov ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. If one sees his/her father violating any Torah related
prohibition, he/she should NOT tell their father “you are violating a Torah
law,” rather they should pretend that they do not know what is going on and ask
them “isn’t it true that so and so forth is prohibited according to Halacha?” This
way one does not embarrass their father and he/she gets the point across. The
same goes for one’s mother. If one’s parent is completely uneducated in regards
to Torah laws, then the child should explain to them in a story like this: “There
was once a fellow who do so and so forth and the Haham of the town (Rabbi,
religious leader) explained to him/her that is was prohibited to act this way
according to the Torah.” If both the father and son got stronger in their
Avodat Hashem and Mitzvot and the son needs to teach him how to act, he can say
it in a direct manner.
2. If one’s father on purpose goes against a Torah Law, even
if he knows its prohibited to do so, there are those who say the child may not
respond whatsoever. However, if there is the slightest chance that the son can
say a respectful remark that would cause the father to change his ways and
accept the rebuke, then the son may do so. This stands as well with Secular
Jews where one gets a Mitzvah for bringing Secular Jews closer to realize that
the Torah and Keeping Mitzvot is filled with sweetness and good. Therefore, if
one sees his father view derogatory and uncensored films on public television
or in secular newspapers and he can successful explain to him the grave
negative affects they have on the Jewish soul, it is without question mandatory
for the son to do so to save him from sin. However, if the father does not
understand the fact that there is any prohibition behind watching television,
then the son should keep quiet.
