Rashb"i T'ZL

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
The day of Lag Ba’Omer is a day of Simcha, happiness, to respect the Tannah Rabi Shimon Bar Yohai (Rashb”i), which is the Hilula (yortzite) of Rashbi. Therefore the Yalkut Yosef has the minhag (custom) to have many people gather to learn the teachings of Rashbi throughout Shas well into the Lag Ba’Omer night.

Rav Tzadok from Yerushalayim told me this morning that the entire focus of Lag Ba’Omer is to be thrilled and overjoyed that the Torah provides so much Kedusha (purity)! What does that mean? That we bring to reality the words of the holy Torah that teach us “Veze Hayenu VeOrech Yamenu:and this is our life and the lengthening of our days! So what is the problem? I have my set learning everyday and I try to fulfill the Torah and the mitzvot. So what? Why is Lag Ba’Omer such a big deal?!

Rashbi's Grave, where
600,000 Jews will be visiting
in the next 24 hours.
The answer is simple: many of the Goyim do learn the Talmud, they even learn it everyday like Daf Yomi sort of (if only they would reach an ounce of holiness that the people that learn Daf Yomi reach). The difference between them and holy Jews is that they see it as another Miktzo’ah, like the Torah is just another textbook in a college library teaching me a profession of rabbinical studies, Hashem yaazor. They don’t see it as life. As building a home where Hashem’s Divine Presence, the Shechina, can dwell in. They do not see it as the foundation and heart and soul of every Jew to continue getting close to Hashem and being in full happiness and knowing that everything is from above.

They do not see it as the guideline of life that was brought down from Moshe Rabbenu who went up to Shamayim to receive it. Rav Tzadok also said one more thing: he said Lag Ba’Omer is special because it is the day we remember Rashb’i who had the unbelievable zechut (privilege) to learn the Penimiyut (inside secrets) of the Torah and brought the Kabbalah into the world. He said that some people also have the zechut today to learn the mysticism behind the secrets of Hashem! However, those who don’t need to connect and learn Gemara because Hashem says so and because the Gemara is the #1 connector between us and Hashem and to really reach the ultimate level of purity.

Tonight is a celebration of the PURITY behind the Torah, not only because it helps one reach everlasting Hochma (wisdom) and helps discipline us to become better human beings, that’s just positive side effects. Bonfires are popular because they represent the firy pureness behind the Torah and how the Torah can create a fire of Spiritual Cleansiness inside one’s soul and body.

Get off your computer and go learn some Torah around a bonfire with your friends!
