For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel
For the Refua Shlema of Chai Yaakov ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. It is a minhag
(custom) for the Bechorot
(first-borns) to fast during Erev Pesach (this Friday), whether the person is a
first born from his mother or father. First borns fast today because of the
great nes (miracle) that Hashem did
for them during Yetziyat Mitzrayim, where He killed all the Egyptian
first-borns and not a single Jew. However, for those first borns who have eye
pains are exempt from fasting, because this fast was not formed from the ikar Halacha (the foundation of Jewish
Law) and a peron who is suffering is not obligated to fast.
2. In these past generations where a weakeness has befallen
us and fasting causes a great bothersome in the process of Lel HaSeder,
drinking the 4 glasses of wine and eating Matzah and Marror etc., today’s
Bechorim have the minhag (custom) to
simply participate in a Seudat Siyum Masechet, a Seuda of a Hatan and Kalah
during the 7 days of the Sheva Berachot or Seudat Brit Milah and become exempt
from fasting. These first borns who participate in these celebratory meals do
not have to make up for their act of ‘skipping’ the fast by fasting another day
after Pesach.
