For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
We had the zechut to sit next to an adorable baby boy,
around 8 or 9 months old, with his parents right beside him on a long eleven
hour flight from Tel Aviv to JFK International Airport.
The entire flight was barely disrupted by this cute baby. He
was filled with baby fat and just looked like he wanted to be eaten up. However,
when it was time for some disruption, the baby would start wailing away.
Something would happen during this time that seemed so natural. In fact, if
this would not have happened the passengers on the plane would all be freaked
out and confused.
It is real simple: the parents would jump up and do
everything and anything to have the boy comfortable, to have the baby clean and
most importantly to have the baby feeled with simcha (happiness). So what? What
is so marvelous about this story that should make our bones shake and our
nerves jumping up in an electric frenzy?
The answer is we are all made from Tzelem Elokim, from G-d’s image. It says throughout the Gemara,
just like Hashem ‘behaves’ so too we should behave. Meaning we have an essence
of Hashem inside of us and we need to strive to reach an attitude that
symbolizes Hashem. We should tell ourselves in every situation: What would my
Rabbi do if he’s in this situation?
This fits with the natural reaction of taking care of the
baby at all costs. We all know the parent child relationship is how we can
somewhat (just to calm down our curiousity, obviously even with this information
we cannot understand even the tiniest thread of knowledge of G-d) understand
Hashem.
Will a father accept his child after deserting him and
leaving him? I think he will. Hashem is not some monster in the sky striking
down diseases and problems. He is our Father, just like our biological one. He
is filled with love and just wants THE BEST for us. So why can’t we just stop
being stubborn and listen?
Its all up to you.
