For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
What does it mean to be on vacation?
We live in a crazy and stressful environment where there is
nonstop assembly lines of thinking and action operating. Especially in a
society like the tri-state area in New York we tend to forget the term vacation
and live under the term “Go.” The light is always green and we are always
running from task to mission to the next goal.
But what we fail to give attention to is our Yetzer HaTov,
our POSITIVE desire to connect with Hashem. Our POSITIVE inborn push and
motivation to constantly work on ourselves to become better people, more
spiritually connected Jews.
Therefore, this everlasting desire leads us to feel a need
for vacation. A need to avoid all these present distractions of the next sale
for my company or the next meeting with the future salesperson.
Therefore comes along Pesach, Passover, and we see the
opportunity to channel this great need for vacation from these distractions by
going to some beach or some fancy island hours away by plane. But why do we let
our need for vacation ignore the fact that there is a need to satisfy our
spiritual longing for Hashem? Meaning, we tend to just solely focus on our need
to relax, to put our feet in the sand, to just let loose completely.
We need to understand that vacation is important, but it
does not mean we put it as a priority more important than satisfying Hashem’s
level of happiness with us. Vacation is not going to Miami and drinking Kosher
for Pesach beer during the day and clubbing at night, Hashem Yaazor. However,
vacation is going to Miami and finding a group of Jews and starting up many
different Minyanim in the morning to fit everyone’s spiritual desires/needs.
Vacation is going to Miami to get closer with your wife by walking together
along Collins Ave and talking about future plans. Vacation is going to Miami
and reading Tehillim by your room balcony with a glass of wine doing some self-reflection
and speaking to Hashem.
Vacationing in a
religious environment is possible, but its all up to you.
