For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
After our remarkable Parasha, Parashat Beshalach, breaks
down the event of Kriyat Yam Suf (Splitting of the Red Sea), the entire nation
sings Az Yashir (which has endless amounts of commentary, Midrashim, unreal
stories, and exciting future prophecies). After this happens, Hashem instructs
Moshe to lead the nation to start the journey in the Midbar (desert, by having
the famous Clouds of Glory travel alongside the Nation wherever they go, look
at the CLDs from Sukkot). After some time the complaints begin.
We will see this throughout the next couple of Parshiyot as
well. A Small percentage of Am Yisrael complains: there is no water! There is
no food! You brought us here to die! We had a better life in Mitzrayim! Blah
Blah Blah…
One of the Psukim that speaks about Hashem’s huge Middah of
Rachamim (attribute of mercy) is when He brought down the Quail from the sky to
put on the BBQ’s (which have a lot of fat and hold fine meat, according to
Rashi). We learn major Mussar from Rashi which helps us live better lives. The
Pasuk starts like this: “And Moshe said: when Hashem gives you in the evening
meat to eat and bread in the morning…”
Rashi on Shemot 16:8 asks: “U’Ma Ra’ah Lehorid Leched Baboker VeBasar Ba’Erev…” And what did Hashem
see in bringing down Bread in the morning and meat in the evening?
Rashi continues to answer that the reason Hashem did this is
simple: Derech Eretz (to teach certain rules about the world). Man should not
get full from meat, because really the body only needs bread. We do not need to go out of our way if stuck on an
island to BBQ a nice steak. Bread is fine to live. This is the reason why Bread
was giving in the morning. After they woke up, all their necessary bodily needs
were satisfied.
Let’s expand on the matter: For life we should only focus on
what we need, not what is extra and
what we all want. Yes, it is extremely important to be able to give your child
money to go get whatever candy he/she wants at a young age. And yes it is
important to have extra cash in the bank in case of an emergency. But sometimes
we create problems for ourselves by going out the extra mile to push all laws
of nature and become mutli billionaires. The simple average human does not need
that money to survive. Hashem wants us to live our lives on an average basis,
not to show off and not to starve. We all need to set a balance to our lives
with everything. In the end of the day Hashem controls our Parnasah anyways.
We can jump to say
this is the reason for Shabbat: everyone needs a rest from the physical and a
full 25 hours per week to walk into a super spiritual realm (that with the
physical we reach the spiritual like eating Seudot Shabbat). The Torah sets the balance point for all humanity forever.
SHABBAT SHALOM!
