For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. There are those who have the minhag (custom) to greaten the intake of dairy foods during the
holy days of Chanukah to remember the miracle that occurred under the brave Yehudit. (The reason women are also
obligated in lighting Nerot Chanukah
is because they were part of the miracle of Chanukah against the Greeks as
well. All the Bnot Yisrael, the Betulot
(virgins, which means all the women before they went off with their husbands
after their wedding night) had to be submitted into Aliphorno’s room, a cruel Greek Minister.) Rabbi Yochanan Cohen’s
daughter, Yehudit was beautiful. She
fed the Minister cheese to make him thursty. She gave him a lot of wine to get
him sleepy and drunk. With the help of Hashem she chopped off his head.
Therefore there are those who eat dairy products, and mainly cheese on
Chanukah.
2. On Chanukah there are those who also have the minhag (custom) to eat Sufganiyot
(Chanukah doughnuts). The Sufganiyot are doughtnuts dunked in oil to remember
the miracle of the Shemen Zayit (olive oil) that was used to light the Menorah
in the Beit HaMikdash after the Greeks violated and descreated the Holiest
structure in the world. (Rav Yitzchak Yosef adds:) and all your actions should be LeShem Shamayim (an action done
separately for Hashem, meaning for the right reasons).
