For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. The appropriate time to light Chanukah Candles is at Tzet HaKochavim (Nightfall: Next Tuesday
Night, which is the first night of Chanukah will be at 5:15pm EST). One should
first pray Arvit before lighting Chanukah candles because there is a klal (general rule) of Tadir Ve’Eno Tadir, Tadir Kodem
(frequent and infrequent, frequent first). According to the Gemara the specific
time to stop lighting Chanukha candles with the proper Berachot is once no foot
is seen in the Shuk (marketplace). In any case, today one can still light
Chanukah Candles and say a Beracha if they have another person with them until Alot
HaShachar (dawn, which is 5:47am EST). If they are alone they do not light
Candles with a Beracha.
2. When the homeowner lights Chanukah candles, they should
gather all the household members together to light. There are those who say one
should have two people with him while lighting Chanukah candles, and if the
household members are asleep they should not light. However, there are those
who say that even if they cannot wake them up, they can still light, and this
is also acceptable.
