For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. Even though the Mitzvah of Nerot Chanukah (lighting
Chanukah candles) pushes off the Mitzvah of Tzedakah (charity) [we learn this
from the Halacha that a poor person needs to sell his own clothing to buy
candles to light the Menorah], the Mitzvah of Chanukah does not push off any
Mitzvah from the Torah (for example, if I am about to light Chanukah candles
and my father asks me to make him tea, I must make him tea first).
2. If one has enough wicks and oil to light the best amount
of candles for Chanukah, meaning the number of candles marks the day of
Chanukah (for ex. six candles on the sixth day) and their friend doesn’t have
oil or candles; it is better to light one candle per night (for ex. a single
candle on the first, second, third, etc. day of Chanukah) to give the zchut (privilege) to the friend to light
Chanukah candles. This stands because according to Halacha one only needs to
light a single candle per night.
