CLD #458

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
There is no such thing as something happening without a reason for it to happen. Our Parasha is another action packed Parasha that makes you want to devour the Torah and just know more and more! So how do we see the Midah KeNeged Midah (measure for measure) in this week’s parasha?
Thank G-d for Rashi, who explains this in great detail. Rashi explains from the words of the Pasuk (Bereshit 37:2), “VaYaveh Yosef Et Dibatam Ra’ah Al Avihem,” “and Yoseph brought evil tales about them to their Father.” Rashi explains the three things that Yosef told Yaakov which was not true about his brothers. The first is that his brothers ate Ever Min HaChai (ate limbs from living animals, which is one of the 7 laws of Bnei Noah that cannot be violated). The second Hotza’at Dibah that Yosef told his father was the lie that his brothers from Leah would call his brothers from Zilpah and Bilhah (the Shfachot, maidservants) “slaves.” And the final thing Yosef lied about was the fact that they were involved in illicit sexual relationships.
What happened to Yosef in the near future?
The first (Ever min HaChai): When they dipped the Kutonet Pasim (famous coat) in the blood of a Se’ir (young animal), they slaughtered it properly and did not eat it alive. The Second (some Shvatim called other Shvatim ‘slaves’) is seen as Midah KeNeged Midah when Yosef was sold as a slave. The third (claiming the Shvatim had illicit relationships) is the fact that Eshet Potifar (the wife of Yosef’s master in Mitzrayim) had crazed obsession to get Yosef in her bedroom and sleep with him!

Ptolemy
We see here how important it is to watch what one says. How can we link this to Chanukah (Tuesday night)? Rav Shlomo Pinto shlit’a teaches that Chanukah is also based from the concept of Midah KeNeged Midah. There was a decree by Ptolemy that forced 72 Zkenim (the sages) of the generation to translate the Torah into Greek. There was a miracle that all the Zkenim translated it with 13 mistakes to make sure that Ptolemy will not get upset with the translation (such as using a different animal for the Hebrew word Rabbit because his wife’s name was Rabbit, etc.). For this reason, even if it looked “100% Kosher,” there was EXACLTY 13 Impure Acts in the Beit HaMikdash that the Greeks desecrated!

B’H we should all just be dipped into a sea of holiness this Shabbat to wake up, do Teshuva and just be filled with Simcha, Briyut and overall Hatzlacha!

SHABBAT SHALOM!
