For the Refua Shlema of Mordechai Tzvi ben
Sara & Binyamin ben Blanka.
In the last Chapter of the Book Yehoshua (Joshua) from Nevi’im
(Prophets), Yehoshua tells all of Am Yisrael his last wish to promise him
(before his death at 110 years) to always be glued to Hashem!
Before he gets to the final covenant (by prophecy) with Hashem, Yehoshua recites briefly the history of the Jewish
people. He states how Avraham Avinu was the only one from such a wicked family
(for example, Terach, his father, was an idol worshipper and idolatry salesman
but he did do Teshuva in the end) to completely revolt against the entire world
and be THE ONLY ONE for believed in a single G-d! Also, after Yehoshua brings
up Yitzchak, Avraham’s child that would carry on the Jewish gene, Yehoshua
brings up BOTH Yaakov Avinu and Esav in the same Pasuk.
Metzudat David explains why Yehoshua brought
up Esav and Yaakov Avinu, which were polar opposites in the same pasuk
(Yehoshua 24:4). Why do you need to bring up an evil brother of the Jewish
people when reminding the entire Nation of our history? Pretty weird.
Metzudat David says: It is for THE GOOD that
Yaakov was in the same woman as Esav (they were twins), because Esav sucked out
all the Zuhama (impurity) out of
Yaakov, and Yaakov came out of the womb clean.
AMAZING! Look how the Parshan (commentator)
looks at the good behind everything. Yaakov Avinu is seen as one of the biggest
Jewish figures in the Torah, and one of the most evil and despised people that
caused so much impurity in the world is Esav. If anything, Yehoshua should not
even mention such a name that represented all the lies and deception in the
entire world! Esav is known for his treachery and power to make it all seem
like he is a big angel, but in reality he was full of bad deeds of prostitution
and animal-like behaviors. So what does Metzudat David say? He explains that
you have to look at Esav as a good thing! He is the one who sucked out the last
drops of impurity that were in Yaakov as a fetus (in their mother’s womb) to
make sure the next generation of Judaism will enter the world as holy as
possible to carry on the Emunah (faith) and Ahavat Hashem that was carved in
his father (Yitzchak) and holy Grandfather (Avraham Avina A’H).
We always need to look at the good and always
be happy. Rav Yoshiyahu Pinto shlit’a asks: what does it mean to be happy? When
one does not dwell on the past and does not worry about the future. The present
is where the success lies.
It is time to change.
It is time for Judaism.
And it all lies in YOUR hands.
