L’yilui Nishamt Avraham ben Ester, Shahin Shmuel
ben Hadassa &
Israel Ben Rivka.
From Yalkut Yosef:
1. The Rambam writes that the
Simcha one should have on Sukkot is to dine (meat & wine) with his wife,
family, friends and invite poor people (or feed them). However, one who eats
and drinks with a closed door (to the poor) with only his family, does not do
the Mitzvah of Simcha on Chag Sukkot. Therefore, one should invite the poor for
meals and/or sponsor meals for the part of Am Yisrael who cannot afford to do this
Mitzvah of Simchat Chag Sukkot.
2. The Seventh day of Chag Sukkot (beginning tomorrow night)
is called Hoshana Raba and it is the last day (of the 51 day Teshuva period,
from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Hoshana Raba) that Am Yisrael receives the
opportunity to do Teshuva (and it will be accepted) for the upcoming year
judgment. Therefore, all of Am Yisrael holds the custom to stay up all night
Learning Torah and praying. One should learn with Simcha (joy) and excitement,
because Hoshana Raba is the night where the signed verdict from Rosh HaShanah
is sealed and sent out.
