L’yilui Nishamt Avraham ben Ester, Shahin Shmuel
ben Hadassa &
Israel Ben Rivka.
From Netzor Leshoncha (about Lashon Hara):
1. Just like one cannot say Lashon Hara (saying negative
truthful things about another) to an individual, also one cannot say it to
many. The one who says Lashon Hara to many has a more severe punishment,
because of two reasons. One: because the one who is being spoken about is has
his/her reputation even more reduced when spoken about to many. Two: because
the one speaking causes more people to sin by violating the sin of listening to
Lashon Hara.
2. One who reveals a secret to a friend, and the secret is
said with a tone that it should be kept between themselves, the one listening
cannot reveal it to anyone else. This also fits for the situation where the one
revealing the secret did not say anything that shows the importance of keeping
it a secret. Generally, it is a good habit to avoid saying anything one told
you unless he/she specifically gave permission to tell others. In this way, it
is promised that one will never reveal something that will cause damage.
