CLD #381

Elul: a month to reflect.
For the Refua Shlema of Mordechai Tzvi ben Sara & Binyamin ben Blanka.
Al Pi HaRav Nissim Levy shlit’a:
When the Torah says “day,” it refers to Rosh HaShanah. Hayom Harat Olam (transaltion: Current momentous day…) is a song that the Tzibbur sings on Rosh HaShanah (next Wednesday). It is known that the Parshiot from Tu B’Av (15th of Av, about a month ago) up until next week (Parshat Ha’azinu) all give signs to the Jewish people to do Tshuva (repent) for the upcoming judgment of Rosh HaShanah. We have reached the parshiyot of Nitzvaim-VaYelech.
What is the sign to get ready for Rosh HaShanah this week?
“You are all standing this day before the Lord, your God the leaders of your tribes, your elders and your officers, every man of Israel, your young children, your women, and your convert who is within your camp both your woodcutters and your water drawers… (Devarim 29:9-10)”
“this day” means Rosh HaShanah. It is the day where we all literally stand in front of Hahsem and we each pass through a court case investigating through our actions in the last year, to see if we will be written in the book of life vs. the book of ‘not-life.’
Tefillah: Its the foundation of Effort!
The acronym of “you are all standing this day,” or Atem Nitzavim Hayom, comes out to: Aleph-Nun-Hey, which is the word “Ana.” We say Ana during Hallel when we pray to Hashem to help us succeed in all areas of life. But if we look deeper in the Psukim, we see that it doesn’t matter who we are, man/woman, child/adult, Rabbi/layman, everyone gets judged on this day!
Something even more attractive from these psukim: a question. The psukim bring up the wood-cutters and water bearers, what is the difference between them? There is no difference, so what is the pasuk trying to distinguish between them? Answer: It is not literally speaking about the wood-cutters and the water bearers themselves, rather the pasuk is telling us about the acts of wood-cutting and water bearing during the times of the Beit HaMikdash. When did they complete the mission to bring wood to the Beit HaMikdash in the time of Shlomo HaMelech? On Tu BeAv. When did they do the water bearing process on the Mizbeach in the Beit HaMikdash? On Hoshana Raba, Yom HaSho’eva.
These times fall between Av up until the end of Tishrei (August-October lehavdeel). This is the time Hashem is telling us: WAKE UP AND DO TSHUVA! And it is all written in codes in the Torah for us to decipher and interpret to push us to get closer to Hashem, cuz that’s all He wants from us, to be closer to Him and be happier.
It’s time to tell ourselves: Hashem, help me want to want to get closer to you! If you love me, then show me you love me! Help me with these next 11 days to get ready for Yom HaDin, Judgment Day! Make it easier for my eyes to see Your presense, for my ears to understand Your words from the Siddur in the morning, and for my heart to open up when hearing every syllable of Your holy Torah!

 SHAVUA TOV!
Yom Kippur is in 21 days.
Rosh HaShanah is in 11 days.
Selichot has already BEGUN.
