For the Refua Shlema of Mordechai Tzvi ben Sara & Moshe ben Mazal.
HaBayit HaYehudi is a book written by one of the students of Rav Ovadya Yosef shlit’a, Rabbi Aharan Zakai (from Yerushalayim). He has an introduction dedicated to the understanding of the Days of Fasting during the year for Am Yisrael. He writes about Tisha BeAv and the whole concept of Ben haMetzarim (the 21 days between the first fast dedicated to the memory of the Beit HaMikdash, 17 Tammuz, until the second fast dedicated to the memory of the Destruction of both the Batei HaMikdash, Tisha BeAv). He explains that Tisha BeAv is the day that five major events happened in history: Both Batei HaMikdash (temples) were destroyed, the Chet HaMeraglim (the spies speaking badly about Israel before entering the land in the times of the Torah), the City of Beitar was completely destroyed with all its iinhabitants slaughtered and left unburied in the Revolution of Bar Kochba in the times of the Gemara, and the conquering of the City of Yerushalayim by our enemies.
The Chorban (destruction) of the Beit HaMikdash is valued like the entire Jewish Nation and the land of Eretz Yisrael has been destroyed! The destruction of the ‘Spiritual Energy’ of Hashem (the Shchina) was resulted from the Beit HaMikdash. The real Galut (Galus, exile) for Am Yisrael is this form of punishment, the Exile of the Shchina.
Am Yisrael gets closer to Hashem through metaphors. So we will explain what its like to have the Beit HaMikdash, which was the “House” of Hashem, destroyed.
Imagine your father has a beautiful, shiny bright Red Ferrari F360 (with a crazy insurance bill every month) that he cherishes as his one and only lifeline. After everyday scrubbing the car, and saving up money just to add accessories to the interior, etc. a robber comes and he doesn’t even steal it, he just completely totales the car! Takes the interior, completely vandalizes it, then smashes the car into a metal pole, burns the paint, keys the car, and just completely destroys the engine! Your father is just depressed for weeks and weeks, the only thing that he has that makes him somewhat happy are the pictures of the trips he used to take with the car.
LEHAVDEEL (you cannot compare Hashem, the Creator of the World, that a Ferrari means absolutely nothing to Him to a man) Hashem is the ‘same.’ Hashem’s ‘Ferrari’ was the Beit HaMikdash. It was the place where Hashem gave all the good in the world from His world to ours, sharing all the Shchina, the good spiritual blessings throughout the world! It was a place where one could really repent for all sins, and have a sacrifice be slaughtered (in the most non-violent way: Kosher Shchita/slaughtering). This was all destroyed and even worse will our enemies thousands of years ago killing everyone on their way (millions of Jews) to the Beit HaMikdash in the Old City. The only thing that makes Hashem somewhat happy today is the “Four Amot of Halacha” that a person obtains, meaning a person’s space, about 12 feet radius around a person who keeps Torah & Mitzvot. Its like a Father having a child who cannot come visit him no more because he has no home. Hashem’s home has been destroyed. Do you even care?
