CLD #183

Twice daily, we say in Tfillat Shacharit "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh.." We also say during amida "HaKel HaKadosh." In Parashat Kdoshim Hashem tells Moshe to tell Bnei Israel (to tell us:) "Kdoshim Tehiyoo," Be HOLY! On Kiddush during Shabat we say "Baruch Ata Hashem Mekadesh HaShabat, from the route "Kadosh." Sanctify, purify, make holy, could it be this definition? What does it mean to be Kadosh? Is saying "Be Holy" enough? Rashi says be "Prushim min HaArayot U'Min HaAvera..." Translation: "separate yourselves from sexual immorality and from sin, for wherever one finds a barrier against sexual immorality, one finds holiness" (JTSA.edu).

How can we relate this to our lives?
This literally means to separate ourselves in general. We are not meant to mix, we are literally told to turn away from normalcy, from the way the society runs. For example, in our day, it is common to do whatever we want, we are told to live a life that is run by our instinct, by our body's desires. G-d tells us "Al Tatooroo Acharei Levavchem VEAcharei Enechem." When we are smacked in front of a huge Victoria Secret Poster with a gorgeous Goya naked we are told to turn away. We always need to push to separate from the body, to let our souls take over and do everything based on our Yetzer HaTov. This is the only way we reach happiness, the only way which we reach the goal of our lives: to emulate Hashem and to connect to the source of spirituality, to the source of all good, of perfection. Just like we need to separate good fruit from bad when buying produce, so to Hashem wants us to be separated from immorality. Its a simple concept that we cannot find loopholes for.

B'H we'll have the zchut to do Torah and mitzvot and be Ovdei Hashem with simcha!
