KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHE’HOO BEN HA’OLAM HABA

From Ve’En Lamo Michshol:

1. One should be cautious not to get his/her clothing dirty while eating and if they eat with their hands they should only get their fingertips involved and not their entire hand in order to keep their hands clean. It is best to eat with a knife or spoon and if a host feeds his/her guests food with sauce without a utensil it is like he/she is causing them to sin and belittling the respect of his/her guests. When a man is eating he should make sure to avoid getting his beard dirty as well.

2. A person eating without a fork and leftover food got stuck to his fingers must avoid licking his fingers because it is not derech eretz (appropriate behavior) to do so. Rather, this individual should simply clean his hands with a napkin or rinse them off with water and soap to avoid being viewed like a starving person.
