CLD #807

In the Even Ha’Ezer section of the Shulhan Aruch (The Jewish Code of Law), Rav Yosef Karo ZTK’L speaks about getting married and the boundaries between which type of family an individual should marry into. This law teaches that an individual is not allowed to marry off his daughter to an Am Ha’Aretz (an ignorant). The Rosh (Rabenu Asher), which is a commentator on the Talmud, explains that an ignorant is an individual who is allowed to be killed on Yom Kippur because he does sins to get Hashem angry and is not beneficial to the Heavens or people.

It is so terrible to get married to daughters of an Am Ha’Aretz that Rashi explains that is like an individual who lies with an animal (Devarim 27:21)! What terrible and extreme language! However, we must remember that this Am Ha’Aretz is an individual who does sins to anger Hashem! This means he raises his entire household to follow suit.

The Tore Zahav on this Law brings down Rashi who explains that these daughters of an Am Ha’Aretz do not understand the importance that the Torah is the life of a Jew in this world and in the world to come. The Tore Zahav (Taz) explains that these women who grew up in the anti-Torah household will make sure to make their husbands busy in business and trade to become rich and go shopping all day because if they engage in Torah learning they will not have any benefit from this world. The Taz explains the opposite, that living a life of Torah is Living THIS WORLD TO THE FULLEST!

How much do we need to be stringent on who we date and which family we involve ourselves with! How much do we need to repeat to ourselves that a life of Torah is The Happiest Life?! Be’ezrat Hashem may we be filled with love for Torah and Mitzvot and avoid lives of an Am Ha’Aretz and push to live lives of Torah Scholars and righteous men and women!
