Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. One who enters another individual’s home needs to do
everything the ba’al habayit
(homeowner) tells him/her to do (unless it is something against halacha). It is simple derech eretz (manners) to wait until the
ba’al habyit asks for something
before doing it. If the guest has the minhag
(custom) to follow in a stricter way of halacha, he/she can continue being
strict and follow his/her way even if the ba’al habayit does not follow it (for
example: halav yisrael). However, if
a custom is just something the individual does that is abnormal, then he/she
should keep silent about their ways and not reveal what he/she does.
2. One should be cautious to avoid getting his/her clothing
dirty while enjoying a meal and eat with a fork and knife as opposed to their
hands. One should become accustomed to eating slowly and waiting between
chewing to avoid being a misbehaved eater. One should avoid slurping down two
cups one immediately after the other, they should avoid holding in their hand a
big piece of bread that is uncommon to hold during a meal, and one should
follow these customs even when eating alone at home.
