CLD #758

Rav Shelomo Pinto shlit’’a explained in last year’s Shiurim (Torah Classes) that Hannukah comes in the end of the Jewish month and not in the middle (just like every other holiday including Sukkot, Pesah, Purim, Tu B’Av, Tu B’Shevat etc.) because Hannukah comes to light up the world. It is known that the lunar calendar follows the moon. The moon becomes more and more visible from the beginning of the Jewish month until the middle, when the full moon is seen. Once the moon hits the full moon level, it begins to dwindle and almost even disappear by the end of the month.

Therefore, when Hannukah is introduced into the world on the 25th of Kislev, it marks the end of the month when the moon gets smaller and smaller. The moon represents Am Yisrael and the Kedusha and Shefa (spiritual energy) entering the world for the purity of the Jewish people. In the time of the end of the month it is more difficult to connect to Hashem (without learning Torah and keeping Mitzvot) and on a basic level each individual cannot succeed like in the beginning of the Jewish month. With this information we see Hashem instructed the 25th of Kislev to be the time that the Hashmonaim find the Pah Shemen because it marks a difficult time in the month.

Tonight is Rosh Hodesh Tevet, the 6th night of Hannukah and FRIDAY! This is a time of BEGINNING new things. It is a time of taking upon ourselves something special to start a foundation of kedusha (purity) for ourselves to build a foundation of spirituality. Be’ezrat Hashem we will realize its EASY to start anew with the help of Hashem in a time where we are reaching Hannukah’s greatness, when we are about to enter Shabbat Hannukah AND it is Rosh Hodesh!

How much was Gilad Shalit’s father upset and experienced sleepless nights for 5 years when his son was in Hamas’ hands? How much sadness does Hashem ‘feel’ by us ignoring Him and the holy Torah? Maybe it’s a time to turn around 180 degrees and try to keep one tiny thing this Shabbat that we didn’t keep last Shabbat?

Shabbat Shalom!
Hannukah Sameah!
Hodesh Tov!
