Translated from Rav Ovadia’s Halacha Emails (to subscribe to
Halacha Emails go to Halachayomit.co.il):
1. Whoever left their seat during a meal of bread and other
foods to go use the bathroom, must wash their hands (Netillah washing) when
returning to the meal. If this individual wants to continue eating 54 grams (Kabetzah) of bread they can also say the
Beracha of Al Netillat Yadayim on
this washing. The minhag (custom) of our Ashkenazi brothers is not to bless on
this Netillah even when eating a Kabetzah
amount of bread. In any case, one does not bless HaMotzi at all for the rest of the bread they are eating because
the bathroom break does not ‘cancel’ the first HaMotzi beracha (blessing).
2. One is allowed to go from corner to corner in the same
room during a meal (of bread), however lechathila
(the best alternative) one should not go from the room where they are eating to
another room during a meal. If one did go from room to room during their meal,
because there are those (some of our Hachamim, Sages) who say it is not like a
break (in place) of the meal, one should not return to say the appropriate Berachot
(blessings) on the meal. If one also went from one apartment to another in the
same building during a meal, upon returning they do not say the appropriate Berachot
for the meal. If before the meal one knows they will move from room to room (in
the house) or apartment to apartment (in the same building), when saying the
Berachot for the meal they should have the intention that they will be doing
this and then they are allowed to move around without repeating Berachot.
However, when one wants to go from a home to another home, meaning crossing a
street or public property to go to the other house, upon returning they must
say the Berachot for the meal again.
