CLD #728

In this week’s Parasha, Toldot, we are introduced to the offspring of Yitzchak Avinu and Rivka. The twins that come out of Rivka’s womb (after 20 years of being barren) are Yaakov Avinu and Esav HaRasha (the wicked). We know that Avraham Avinu, Yaakov grandfather (the pioneer of Judaism) is all about Hessed in the scale of the 10 Sefirot of the world (the 10 divine radiances).

What does Hessed have to do with Avraham being Yaakov’s grandfather. The answer is that Yaakov is the father of Israel, the father of the Jewish nation. The strength and spiritual power that Israel gets comes from the actions and behaviors during Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov’s lives. Yaakov, however, is also called Israel in the Torah and therefore we are mostly connected to him (Benei Yisrael=the children of Israel, of Yaakov).

The Ben Ish Chai provides a beautiful answer. When we look at Avraham Avinu we directly connect him with Hessed (kindess from Hashem). How do we know that we, the Children of Israel (Yaakov), also receive this Hessed that Avarahm represents given from Hashem? From the name Avraham itself! Avraham is Aleph-Bet-Resh-Hei-Mem (1-2-200-5-40), which has a numerical value of 248. Yaakov’s numerical value (10-70-100-6-2) is 188 when spelled with the Vav between the Kuf and Bet. If we add the letters of Yaakov’s name from the Torah, Yisrael Yeshurun, the letters add up to 11, which makes our calculation 199. If we add the letters of all the names of the Children of Yaakov (the 12 shevatim, tribes), which represent all of Am Yisrael throughout the world, we get 49. 49+199=248.

We see from the essence of Yaakov (his name itself, the letters of the name given to him by G-d in the Torah, and the letters of all his children’s names) the Hessed that Avraham received in the world is also given to Yaakov and all the future generations of Israel (also us). So smile, because Hashem’s kindness radiates the world and each one of us no matter what spiritual level we are on!
