For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Rav Ovadia’s Halacha Emails:
1. It is permitted to read Keriyat Shema and say its Berakhot (blessings) across from a woman
that has her face and hands uncovered, which are usually uncovered. However, if
one looks at a woman to enjoy from her beauty he is prohibited from reading
Keriyat Shema, even just to look at a woman to enjoy from her pinky’s beauty is
prohibited, even without the need to read Keriyat Shema. Only when a man is
looking at a woman without the intention of enjoying from her beauty he is
allowed to read Keriyat Shema in front of her, even if she is not his wife.
2. If married woman reveals her hair and is in front of a
man, which according to the Din
(Jewish Law) she must cover it, the man may not read Keriyat Shema, even if it
his wife. If the woman is wearing a wig, even though according to Din she may not walk in public wearing a
wig, in any case at home one may read Keriyat Shema in front of her. A married
woman who travels in public revealing her hair, even though she violates Jewish
Law and does a Torah prohibition which she will be judged for it, in any case
one is permitted to read Keriyat Shema in front of her because she is like single
women who reveal their hair to the public where one can read Keriyat Shema in
front of them.
