KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHEH'HOO BEN HA'OLAM HABA

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Rav Ovadia’s Halacha Emails:

1. One needs to place salt on the table before saying the Beracha of Hamotzi and eating bread, whether it is a weekday or Shabbat. Even though in the times of the Gemara the Hachamim (our Sages) ate bread that had no nutrients/salt and therefore ate it with salt and now all bread is made with salt, the minhag stands to place salt on the table from the time of saying Birkat Hamotzi until the end of the meal. It is a Mitzvah to place salt on the table because a table symbolizes the mizbeah (alter) and the food symbolizes a korban (sacrifice that gives strength to the individual to serve Hashem) that defends us from tragedies. Therefore, one should be cautious every meal to have salt on the table, especially on Shabbat.

2. It is imperative to avoid saying Hashem’s name in a foreign language, such as G-d, Allah, etc. without any meaning (for example saying Oh My G-d), because not only is one entering a suspicion of saying Hashem’s name in vain, but he/she is also showing a lack of respect for the name of Hashem while seeing something shocking. In general, every Jew should become accustomed to purified speech, not to speak like those who say Hashem’s name in vain and ruin their way of speech in crooked ways. Especially since speech is something only humans have, a Jew should be even more cautious to keep it holy.
