For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. We have the minhag
(custom) to eat great meat and sweet foods on Rosh HaShanah because we sanctify
ourselves for Hashem (learned form a Pasuk in Nehemya). One may not fast on
Rosh HaShanah whatsoever but at the same time one should not eat to full
capacity in order to keep a face of Yirat Shamayim (Fear of Heaven). There are
those who also have the minhag of dipping their Hamotzi bread in dvash (honey) or sugar but according to
Rav Haim Palag’i we must also dip it in salt like on regular days.
2. One should make the extra effort to be in full Simah
(happiness) on Rosh HaShanah and G-d forbid to avoid being upset/sad no matter
what. There is also an idea of putting everyone in simha on this great day and
to be cautious not to waste time on things that are aimless to no avail. It is
better to sleep then waste your time on Rosh HaShanah by chatting aimlessly or
doing anything pointless. There are those who have the minhag of finishing
Sefer Tehillim twice on Rosh HaShanah since there are 150 chapters in the book
and reading it twice comes to 300 which is the word kaper (which means atonement of sins) in gematriya (numerical
value).
