For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Wow. Rav Shlomo Pinto shlita’s shiur tonight on Purim was
unbelievable. Going from the most Peshat
level of Torah to the most mystical Kabbalistic level in a matter of minutes is
amazing! Anyone who wants to enjoy adult level Torah Shiurim should come to his
shiurim!
In that case, Rav Shlomo explained in detail why Yom HaKippurim is connected to Purim. In Hebrew,
when one says Kippurim it is as if
they are saying Ke Purim which
translates to: “Like Purim.” The question arises: Why is Yom Kippur, a strict
fast day Like Purim? If anything it should be Like Tisha Be’Av or another fast
day. What does Yom Kippur have to do with Purim?!
The answer is actual so fitting that it is scary we don’t
pick it up on our own! Rav Shlomo explains that every Yom Tov is usually broken
up into two major phases: a time allotted for Hashem and a specific bundle of
time sanctified for our own Kedusha needs. For example, it is known on Yom Tov
to break up one’s day into two main categories: time for me and time for Hashem
(even though its really for me). What does that mean?
Halacha books teach us
that on Yom Tov we need to set aside time for Hashem by going to our local Shul
and praying the necessary Tefillot that “take the place” of the Korbanot
(sacrifices) given on that specific day when the Beit HaMikdash was built.
After one does this, they should take time for themselves by being busy in the
preparation of Yom Tov meals and going to the Beit Midrash (Torah learning
building) to delve into the secrets of the Torah.
On Yom Kippur, it is a day allotted TOTALLY for Hashem. I
mean, come on, who does not feel the concept of fasting when they are in Shul
literally from the morning until nighttime fasting, crying, and praying to
Hashem in full concentration and enthusiasm?! Yom Kippur is definitely not a
day where we have time for ourselves. It is fully “given” to Hashem. (Sidenote:
it is really a therapeautic day for us to reflect on our past sins and helps us
become better individuals, which means that its really a day for us.)
Purim is the complete opposite and kind of like a day “given
to us.” Purim is a day that we need to take advantage for ourselves.
It is not
a day focused on the Tefillot (even though it’s a day when Shamayim, the
Heavens, are open for all Prayers) or a day focused on what food we will eat. It
is a day given to us as a gift to be Happy. That is really it. As the Pasuk
states, Yemei Mishteh VeSimcha, Days of
Feast and Happiness. And one might ask why are we obligated to drink?
Because drinking gets us away from our problems in life and because of the grave
commandment to be happy, Hashem basically tells us DRINK AWAY to focus on ME
and all the great things I give you! The entire foundation of Purim is drinking
wine and engrossing oneself in utter Simcha.
