CLD #475

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
What is the purpose of Yud B’Tevet? The Tenth of Tevet is a fast day that has the Jews remembering the siege of Nevuchadnetzar on Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh in the time of the first Temple. Asarah B’Tevet is also a time of pausing and realizing where we are at spiritually and what we need to fix or improve on.
We know that Yahadut is an endless lifetime challenge to try to try to reach perfection. Hashem is perfect and the Torah and Halachot push us to be like Hashem as much as we can, therefore when one works on him/herself according to the Jewish standards, they are forced to look at everything in a deep way.
When we are fasting, we need to reach a point in the day where we sit down and just think. Where am I in life? What have I accomplished? In what can I improve? With what can I do Teshuva and get a little more closer to Hashem?
For example, if I don’t say Birkat HaMazon with full Kavana (intention), maybe I should start saying it better and with more Kavana to really thank Hashem for the meal I just had. Maybe if I don’t get to Tefillah (minyan) on time, maybe I should start putting more effort to get to Tefillah on time. Set up another alarm in the morning or even one at night reminding me to go to sleep earlier so it will be easier to wake up in the morning.
Maybe the fast is a time to realize how our relationship is with Hashem, with ourselves, and with others. Do I respect my parents enough? How do I act in public?
The list goes on and on. The Tzom is not a time just to try to do anything and not feel the pain of not eating and drinking; the Tzom is a time to use it to change and do something meaningful! In Hebrew we say to eachother : Tzom Mo’il, have a meaningful fast, a fast that will be so influential that it will change who I am for the better!

B’H we should have the zchut to experience a real Tzom Mo’il and celebrate in Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh with the Built Beit HaMikdash Bemhera Beyamenu Amen!
