For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester & Israel Ben Rivka.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. There are two types of thieves that are both violating
many laws of the Torah when stealing: a Ganav
and a Gazlan. A Ganav is one who takes money in secrecy when the owners of the
object/money do not know about it, such as pick pocketing someone. A Gazlan is someone who takes
money/valuables from the owner by force such as grabbing a purse from a lady or
going to a friend’s field and eating from the fruits.
2. One who enters a store and tastes different types of
foods/drinks, he/she is allowed to taste ONLY if they have the intention to buy
it and see if it tastes good or not. However, if the person’s intention is not
to buy anything and just taste the food and acts as if he/she wants to buy,
this person violates the prohibition of Gnevat
Da’at (stealing one’s mind); EVEN IF HE/SHE IS TASTING A TINY BIT (because
the storeowner only forgives those that really intend to buy the food/beverage).
