L’yilui Nishamt Avraham ben Ester, Shahin Shmuel
ben Hadassa &
Israel Ben Rivka.
From Yalkut Yosef:
1. It’s a Mitzvah to wash one’s body and hair with hot water
on Erev Shabbat (Friday) to respect the entrance of Shabbat Kodesh (18 minutes
before Sundown Friday evening). Even if one studies Torah all day, Torah study
should be ‘pushed aside’ for the act of showering for Shabbat! One should be
cautious not to shower to close to the time Shabbat enters in order to avoid
issues of Chillul Shabbat (the breaking of Shabbat). If one cannot shower on
Erev Shabbat (Friday), then one should try on Thursday because whatever is done
closer to the time of Shabbat is understood as the preparation for the respect
of Shabbat. The same goes for Erev Yom Tov (the daytime before Yom Tov).
2. If one’s hair is long, it is a Mitzvah to buzz it off
Lichvod Shabbat (for the respect of Shabbat). If one cannot get a haircut
Friday, they should get one Thursday.
