What is ‘VeHaya eEkev Tishme’un…?” Our Parasha, Parashat Ekev begins with this statement. Rashi explains that Ekev is the ankle, which symbolizes the Mitzvot that we do, but specifically the small Mitzvot that most people do not pay attention to.
What are the majority of these Mitzvot? Mitzvot Ben Adam leChavero, Mitzvot between man and his/her friend. All these Mitzvot are considered some of the highest forms of Mitzvot, since we say every morning in korbanot: These are the things that one does and he/she receives the fruit of their reward in this world and most of the reward is given in the world to come: and it lists Mitzvot such as Bikkur Cholim (visiting the sick) and Kibud Av Ve’Em (respecting one’s parents) and in the end it says Talmud Torah (the study of Torah) is Keneged Kulam, which means is valued more than all of these Mitzvot!
Let’s look in depth at these Mitzvot: Besides the fact that these Mitzvot are all Ben Adam LeChavero, there is another interesting fact about them. THEY ALL MAKE SENSE TO DO! When one hears his/her friend is sick (Lo Alenu), then he/she visits the friend because its common sense, same with respecting one’s parents, and even learning Torah because you are giving back to Hashem what he gave you (life).
So what’s the big deal that Rashi has to say that these type of small Mitzvot, the ones that people do with their Ekev (heels) have such a large influence?
Its because the intention of doing the Mitzvot (the kavana, the meaning of doing something). Everyone can easily do Mitzvot because they make sense, like saying a Bracha before food because G-d runs the world and He put money in your pocket so you can go buy that ice cream, but doing it FOR THE INTENTION OF FULFILLING A MITZVAH BECAUSE G-D SAID SO, THAT IS THE GREATNESS OF THESE TYPE OF MITZVOT.
I am not going to visit my friend because he/she is sick, rather I am doing it because G-d told me!
Reaching this level to be Shomer Shabbat for the reason of “Because G-d told me_ is called LeShem Shamayim, which is what people work their ENTIRE LIVES to try to reach this level of greatness, spiritual, and complete serenity because only then one begins to see what is the joy behind following in the Torah’s path.
SHABBAT SHALOM! LESHEM SHAMAYIM!
