For the Refua Shlema of Moshe ben Mazal.
In Masechet Kiddushin, the Gemara brings a beautiful story to give us Chizuk (strength) regarding the Halachot of Yechud (to be in seclusion with the opposite sex).
The story goes like this:
Captured Women would be brought to the house of the Chasid (a pious person that lives in the real world with the Yetzer Hara and does not try to run away from it) named Rav Amram. Rav Amram would redeem the captured women and set them free by giving them shelter in his attic. One day one of the women passed by Rav Amram and a light shown on her face. Rav Amram made sure to take down the ladder that connected the first floor with the attic. The Yetzer Hara did its job and suddenly Rav Amram took this ladder by himself (which was a ladder that needed 10 people to move it) and started climbing the ladder to go to the attic where the captured women slept (to do a sin). Suddenly, at the middle step of the ladder Rav Amram yelled “Fire at Rav Amram’s home!” All the people of the town came to Rav Amram’s and he told them, I rather have the House of Rav Amram embarrassed in this world than be embarrassed in the world to come. Rav Amram then makes the Yetzer Hara swear to leave him, and he leaves in the form of a pillar of fire. Upon his exit, Rav Amram tells the Yetzer Hara: you might be a supernatural force and I might be flesh and blood, but I overcame your force!
We can learn so much from this story. First of all: HOW AMAZING is it that Rav Amram attempted to decrease the chances of doing a sin by taking down the ladder beforehand. This teaches us to always try to put yourself in a place of spiritual certainty (meaning Kosher environment). Second: This story shows how strong the Fire of the Yetzer Hara is. It is so strong (even today) that it gave a PIOUS RABBI strength to pick up a ladder alone that is heavy for 10 men to pick up! Third: How much more strength does one need to fight the Yetzer Hara while being in the situation at your weakest point. Meaning how much strength did he have by yelling “fire, fire” because that caused a RABBI to be embarrassed. Fourth: This teaches us sometimes in order to succeed spiritually we need to speak to someone about our toughest obstacles, or even non-religious things. Fifth: No matter who we are, where we are, or at any level we are, WE ALL HAVE the tools to overcame the obstacles in life. Sixth: It is better to be embarrassed in this world than be embarrassed in the Olam Haba.
This story is only a couple lines in the Gemara, imagine learning 1 or even 2 pages of Gemara a day!
B’H we should always learn to live in Simcha and Ahava under the guidance of Hashem.
